Can Clean Beauty Do Glam?
The buzz around clean beauty is growing every day.
The question I’ve heard the most is “what is clean beauty anyway?”
Some clean beauty advocates have become so frustrated by the term that they’re moving away from it.
As it turns out, we’re still without a clean beauty standard. The space is evolving but it hasn’t been clearly defined, hence the frustration around the term “clean beauty”.
Enter Credo Beauty.
Yesterday I went live on Katey Denno’s IG page using all clean beauty, 99% of which was from Credo. The other products came from my faves, LYS and Róen Beauty.
While some of my mini haul was gifted, I did go to the Williamsburg store to pick up a few more things and to see what Credo is about.
Here’s the full face of clean glam we created on the live:
Here is the full product list.
You’re looking at a face of Kosas, Exa, Kjaer Weis, Lys Beauty, Rituel de Fille, and Eco Brow to name a few.
I added my thoughts on each product in the notes. Be sure to check those out while you’re there.
Credo has a Dirty List which prohibits 2,700 ingredients either because they’ve been deemed unsafe or because they’re not sustainable. Beyond that, they require a few other things (clearly doing more than the U.S. Gov is doing in the way of regulating harmful ingredients).
Here’s what else Credo requires according to their site:
“Use official ingredient terminology (called INCI) and use ingredient source codes where possible
Obtain documentation on their ingredients’ composition, purity and sourcing information
Conduct basic consumer safety (on humans…that volunteer!) and product stability testing
Back up product and ingredient claims
Be transparent about “fragrance”—at a minimum they must categorize the type of fragrance they use, and we encourage full disclosure of all fragrance ingredients.”
I’m no clean beauty expert, but as someone who has dealt with the effects of hormonal issues, my curiosity has definitely been piqued.
For the first time I’m thinking about what I can (easily) change in my routine. Hey, it’s a start.
Another clean beauty advocate I’m following is founder Jazmin Alvarez. Her company Pretty Well Beauty, a consciously curated beauty and wellness shop does this cool product swap where they take a popular product and share the clean swap for it.
For someone like me who still uses and loves many products that would never be allowed in Credo or Pretty Well Beauty, they are making the whole world feel more accessible and relatable while introducing us to brands and educating us.
I’m excited for a future filled with more high performance clean beauty options and less of that exclusive vibe it became known for.
Oh, and the answer to - can clean beauty glam?
I think so, although my search for a clean concealer that lasts and has an inclusive shade range continues.
Talk soon,
