Chemical vs Mineral Sunscreen 👀

First, let me say, any sunscreen is better than no sunscreen.

Plus, I wouldn’t dream of ever coming between anyone and their faves.

With that said, it feels like the conversation around sunscreen is a tad incomplete. The glow that is now sold as a feature of a great sunscreen isn’t what our sun protection is for and quite frankly, it’s overhyped (in my opinion, allegedly lol).

We have plenty of glow products on the market and many do it well.

What about the white cast? Yes, trust me. As a melanated person, I get it. We want better formulas and we have seen some strides.

Beyond that, some of us might actually be ignoring the fact that while we’re slathering on two fingers worth of a glowy SPF, our skin may not love a chemical sunscreen. I was one of those people.

After a couple of years of not making the connection, I started to notice that every time I wore any kind of chemical sunscreen, my face would be covered in a rash. At first I thought I just needed a facial. It was this wave of texture all over my face.

I’ve only seen something similar in 2 other instances: Sun rashes and a compromised skin barrier. So of course, it was time for some detective work.

It wasn’t until I started looking into it that I realized what was happening. My skin was telling me what wasn’t working. I became dedicated to mineral sunscreen for over 2 years. That was until last year, when I tried the hottest, newest chemical sunscreen. Guess what? Same result.

Since then I’ve switched back to my trusted mineral sunscreen for my face. Even testing out new mineral sunscreen is scary. I tried a different one ( not gonna name it) and broke out as a result on two separate occasions.

It’s noisy out there, and it can be hard to tune into our skin over all the noise. Once we develop that relationship though, it only gets stronger.

I truly hope this helped someone have an a-ha moment if you’ve been dealing with something similar.
