Concealer Tips

Radiant, matte, satin, soft matte, matte OH MY!

Knowing how to shop for concealer goes beyond shade range. As important as undertones are, even that isn’t the end all be all to finding your perfect concealer(s).

Here are some of my favorites. I’ll be updating this list.

What to consider when shopping for concealer:

  1. Skin type. It’s great to get recommendations from trusted pros and influencers but once you get a short list going, it’s time to do a little more homework. Check out the highlights or product description. Was it made with your skin type in mind? If it reads combo/oily and your skin is dry, there’s a good chance you won’t love it.

  2. Finish. What is your desired aesthetic? You wanna look like you just applied your moisturizer all day? 👀 Are you going to be photographed? Will there be bright lights? Just meeting up with friends for brunch? There’s a finish for that. Consider your ideal look before you buy.

  3. Your level of experience. A novice will likely struggle with pro faves like Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer. At the same time someone who has a lot of experience with makeup but is always on the go might prefer something with a doe foot. Your favorite MUA or content creator may love one concealer but if it doesn’t fit with the way you create or your skill level and you find yourself struggling to make it work, it’s time to keep searching.

  4. Do you need 1, 2 or 3 concealers?

If your main concern is covering little imperfections and having everything even, you can likely get away with 1.
Want brighter under eyes/lift areas of the face? For highlighting, you’ll do well with 2 one that matches your skin tone and one 1-2 shades brighter (some people like 3 or 4 shades lighter, that’s up to you).

    Discoloration? Hyperpigmentation?

You may need a color corrector. I had an orange one on hand but here’s a quick basic guide.

    Green/yellow for red (think rosacea)

    Orange for dark under eyes

Pink , Salmon, Peach for dark under eyes on lighter skin tones.

We talked concealer for almost an hour. Here are a few highlights from the live.

Someone asked about the white concealer trend. I So we touched on that too. In general, I do not recommend it, especially darker under eyes and dark skin. It’s honestly unnecessary. But hey, I get it. It’s fun to play.
